Humanism

How and why are different celebrations, ceremonies and festivals important?

This week we have been learning about Humanism.  We found out that Humanists celebrate holidays but there is no religious aspect to them.  These celebrations are created so that each one is unique and personal.

Year 2 invented a new holiday and thought carefully about how they would celebrate this.

Humanists celebrate the birth of a child and choose guardians or mentors to support them and take a special interest in the child.  They make promises to the new baby.

Year 1 thought about promises that they would say to a new baby.

Have a look at some of the lovely promises Catfield thought of.

Holi

How and why are different celebrations, ceremonies and festivals important?

This week we have been learning about the Hindu festival of Holi.  We found out that it is the festival of colours and is celebrated each year in March.  Holi is celebrated to remember good defeated evil when the Demon King's son, Prahlad, was saved by the God Vishnu and the Demon King was killed and Prahlad became ruler.

During Holi, rubbish is collected and bonfires are lit to welcome in the Spring and to symbolise new beginnings.  They dance and sing around the bonfire.  Baskets of flowers are also used during Holi as well as coloured paint being thrown at each other!

We worked together to collect things for our 'bonfire', we then danced and sang around it.  After this we collected coloured paint and were allowed to throw it at each other, we thought it was funny to get Mrs. Holmes too!  We had a fantastic time and lots of laughs and giggles were heard.

Look at the pictures below to see the fun we had and how much we got in our hair.

At the bottom there is a short video of us throwing paint.

Harvest

How and why are different celebrations, ceremonies and festivals important?

This week we found out about the festival of Harvest.  We talked about why Christians celebrate Harvest, sing songs and pray.  We found out that God is thanked because He created the world and all that is in it.  We also found out that many years ago people only had the food that they could grow, luckily we can now get food from around the world.

Some of us thought carefully about what we are thankful for; carrots and broccoli were mentioned quite a lot!

Year 2 sang a Harvest song and then talked about what it means.  Have a look at some of the amazing decorations and writing about it.
